A chromosome study of five Saxifraga species collected in the Qin Ling Mountains, Shaanxi Province, China

Saxifraga sibirica L., S. montana H. Smith, S. giraldiana Engl., S. confertifolia Engl. et Irmsch. and S. pseudohirculus Engl. collected in the Qin Ling Mountains, Shaanxi Province, China were studied on somatic chromosomes at resting and mitotic prophase and metaphase stages. They had commonly the simple chromocenter type at resting stage and the proximal type at the mitotic prophase stage. The somatic chromosome number of 2n=28 in S. sibirica and that of 2n=16 in S. giraldiana and S. confertifolia were reported here for the first time. The 2n=32 chromosomes in S. pseudohirculus observed here verified the previous report but the 2n=16 chromosomes in S. montana observed here differed from the 2n=32 chromosomes in the species in the previous reports. Saxifraga sibirica had very small chromosomes ranged from 1.2-0.8μm, while S. montana, S. giraldiana, S. confer-tifolia and S. pseudohirculus had large chromosomes ranged from 4.3-2.3μm, 4.7-2.4μm, 3.5-2.4μm and 5.2-2.6μm, respectively.
