A new thermodynamic theory of III-V semiconductor ternary solid solutions is proposed, based on the bond picture of crystalline semiconductors. An expression for the free energy which includes the effect of short-range clustering is derived, and the degree of the clustering is described by introducing five kinds of tetrahedral cell. The theory is also applied to the case of random mixing, yielding a new interpretation of the interaction parameter.
