Injection-Current-Controlled Bistable Optical Switching in Semiconductor Laser Amplifiers

A new bistable optical switch with large optical gain is demonstrated using a semiconductor laser amplifier. The optical output is switched between the two stable states, the "on" and "off" states, by injecting trigger-current pulses of 〜1 mA amplitude and 〜1 ns width superimposed on a DC bias. Output powers of the order of 1 mW can be obtained in the "on" state in response to input powers of several lens of μW.
