Large scale syntheses of (±)-isodrimenin (4) and (±)-confertifolin (5) were achieved starting from β-ionone via the tricyclic furan derivative (16). Oxidation of this intermediate (16) with lead tetraacetate followed by pyrolysis afforded (±)-confertifolin (5) as a main product. Conversion of the lead tetraacetate oxidation product (17) into (±)-winterin (19) followed by NaBH_4 reduction produced (±)-isodrimenin (4) as a main product.
