Microwave induced steps observed in I-V characteristics of Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_<8+δintrinsic Josephson junctions are experimentally and numerically investigated and the mechanism producing the zero-crossing steps is discussed. The observation of steps in samples with different number of junctions and different sizes indicates that the observed steps were individually produced by each junction. A numerical simulation shows that high harmonics of an AC Josephson current were generated in the junctions. The origin of the steps can be explained by the inverse AC Josephson effect and the high harmonics of the irradiated micrwave frequency.
