Field Induced Spin Ordering in a Weakly-Coupled-Pair System: Ni (NO_3)_2 ・ 6H_2O

Susceptibility 7 and specific heat C. of the single crystal of Ni(NO.).? 6H.0are measured from 0.6 K to 0.06 K around 45 k0e. The field direction is adjustedto the z-axis of the crystal field of Ni" ions in an acctu'acy of 0.5'. On the T-Hphase diagram thus obtained, the critical fields at 0 K are 38 k0e and 48 k0e.Two maxima of critical temperature T., 93 mK at 41.4 k0e and 89 mK at 45.2k0e, are found on the phase boundary. An unexpected minimum of T. is observedat 81 mK at 43.4 k0e. A maximum of Schottky type in C, and z is observed athigher'temperattu'e region outside the phase boundary. These behaviors arewell explained by the model of an Ni" spin-pair coupled by an antiferromagneticinteraction. The intra-pair interaction is estimated to be 2J/k=0.25 K, and twokinds of infer-pair interaction are 2?f3?7k=2?J.. -J3.?/A=0.14K and 2x/k2(J..+J..)/k=O.4O K.
