Heat Capacity of a Strongly One-Dimensional Antiferromagnet Cu (C_6H_5COO)_2・3H_2O : Field-Induced Crossover of Spin-Dimensionality

Strong one-dimensionality of the spin corre1ati?:>n .in CO(C61I5C00)2'3H.0has been revealed by the heat capacity ineasurements ir? the temperature reguonfrom 20 K down to 0.07 K. The ratio of the estitvxated Neel teunperature T.(O)(<0.1 K) under the zero-external magnetic field tc>an interaction energy in thechain, ksTsCO)/2lJ 1.5'(.S'f 1), is less than 0.7 X 10 ", where the excharase cornstantJ has been determined as J/k.= -9.5 .f0.5 K from tire heat capacity measuremnentsbetween 0.5 K axad 2.5 K. This one-dimensionality is comparable with or better'than that of TFv[MC. An anonaalous increase of the heat capacity has been fouzadbelow 1.5 K unaer the externat field up to 12 k0e a?>plied along the c-axis which isrerrendiculaf to the sriua rreferential direction. Thais anomalv can be exrlainedqualitatively by considering the crossover effects of' spiru-dimensionality from theisotropic Heisenberg to the X Y symmetry which is induced by the external field.
