Magnetic Proerties of an S=1 Heisenberg Antiferromagnet TMNIN with Bond Impurity

We have carried out magnetic sttsceptibility and heat capacity measurements on a typical Hatdane antiferromagnet (CHa),;NNi(NO)a (TN[NIN) doped xvith nonznagnetic Zn" ton impuritiesat the concentrations of T.4'A, l1.8% and 2O.4% and on a pure system down to 0.2 K. At lowtemperatures below 1.2 K, the paraunagnetic sttsceptibility expected in the HaJdane systern withthe open chain is fotund to be suppressed. A broad maximtrm of the heat capacity is observedarotrnd 0.7 K for each imptrrity systena. The observed results strongly suggest that there existsan antif'erromagnetic interaction between the edge S : 172 spins ad.jacent to Zn" ions via thenext-nearest exchange interaction J... which can be regarded as a bond itaaptrrity in the Haldanesystem. This is the first experinaent on bond impturity models f'or the Ilaldtrne systetn.
