Quantum-Classical Crossover of Edge Moments in the Diluted Haldane System (CH_3)_4NNi_<1-x>Zn_x (NO_2)_3

Susceptibility and magnetization measurements on the diluted Haldane system (CH3),jNNij .Znr(NOx)s (Zn-doped TMNIN) have been carried out using a SQUID magnetometer, Thecontribution of edge moments in Ni" chains is extracted from the experimental data using theformula employed in the quantum Monte Carlo calculation by Yamamoto and lVIiyashita (Phys.Rev. B 50 (1994) 6277). In the temperature range 5K< T<l5K the Curie-like susceptibilityof the edge moments shifts frona the curve for two effective S = 172 moments to the ctrrvefor one effective S : 1 moment as the temperature is increased. Magnetization curves of ptmreand Zn-doped TIVININ are compared with the calculated ones for periodic and open chains atvarious ternperatures. The crossover behavior is also observed in the ternperature dependenceof the magnetization curves of edge moments.
