The characteristic 1.emperature dependence of heat capacity C has been observed ina ,5= 1 Haldane-gap system (CH.).NNi(NO.). (TMNIN) at low temperatures. In zeroexternal field,the data of Cbelow 2Kfittheequation C=AT 'exp( A/kgT),where the gap energy is A /k.= 4.2 K. As the external field increases to 30 k0e, thevalue of the gap energy A becomes smaller and the heat capacity C comes to dependnearly linearly on the temperature T. A cooling pherromenon has been found in theprocess of adiabatic magnetization at low temperatures, which is most enhanced forthe applied field just above 33 k0e. These results are consistent with the existence ofthe Haldane gap[one-dimensional Fleisenberg antiferromagnet, llaldane gap, (CH.).NNi(NO,)., ]l heat capacity, adiabatic magnetization cooling, siuaglet ground statel
