Reversibility of Phase Transition of Antiferromagnetic CoCl_2・6H_2O under Hydrostatic Pressure

• The hydrostatic pressure dependence of the N<Set temperature, magnetic phasediagram and crystal structure of the antiferromagnetic CoCl.? 6H.O (T.=2.29 K)have been studied by measurements of magnetic heat capacity, susceptibility andX-ray analysis. The anisotropy field H.(p) and the exchange constant J(p) inthe two-dimensional a-b plane have been found to depend linearly on pressurett as #.(r)=ff.(r.) (l -l-0.24r) and J(r)=J(r.) (1 -l-0.O31r) in the ranger.( -0.001kbar)<p<6 kbar. The N<Set temperature T.(p) has been also revealed to dependlinearly on p and to be reversible in the process of p.$p. The appearance ofrounding of heat capacity peak at T.(p), however, has been found irreversible inthe process of compression in the critical temperature region 8(=l7' -7'.l/7'.)<2 x 10 '. The effect of variation of magnetic dimensionality on phase transitionhas been discussed considering these magnetic clata and pressure dependence ofatomic or ionic distances in the crystal.
