S=1 Excitations in Heat Capacity of the Haldane Compound TMNIN Doped with a Nonmagnetic Impurity

• We have studied the field dependence of the heat capacity of a typical Haldane antiferromagnet(CH3)jNNi(NO)3 (TkININ) doped with the nonunagnetic irnptrrity Zn", as well as of a pureTIVININ. The overall feattrres of the rmagnetic lueat capacity, incltrding the characteristic broadnaaximum, are almost reprodtrced by the theoretical curve with J /AB : - 12 K for both systemsin zero field. The field dependence in the imptrre systetns is described well by assuming theSchottky heat capacity with S : 1, not S : 172 expected f'rom the VBS rnodel. A possiblereason xvhy the S : 1 rnodel is stritable is disctrssed.
