Low Temperature Excitations in Low-Dimensional XY Ferromagnets CsNiF_3 end Graphite-CoCl_2

The characteristic temperattmre dependence of magnetic lteat capacities C-of XY ferromagnetic spin systems in one and two dimensions has been observedin CsNiF. and graphite-Coal, respectively. The value of (l'.. of CsNiF3 hasbeen shown to depend linearly on temperature T at low temperatures, and re-produced by the theoretical values for an XY ferromagnetic chain with thereported value of exchange constant J/k.:11.8 K and witlt spin value .5:1.While, in the Coal. compound C- has been found to obey C-cm(J)T' whichagrees with the spin wave theory for an XY ferromagnet in two dimensions withJ/k.w9.7K. The thermal behaviour of these compounds reflects magneticexcitations intrinsic to the XY system, making a typical contrast with the case forthe Heisenberg system.
