Numerical Study of the Energy Decay Law of Turbulence

The energy decay law of turbulence is investigated by solving the Navier-Stokesequation numerically. High symmetry is imposed on the velocity field. The initialenergy spectrum has the form of 7lN(A)c( k' exp [ -Ak'J, n and A being constants. Itisfound that the energy decreases algebraically in time as .15;(Z)cC(Z -t.) ', wherep:1.25 and 1.30 for n=2 and 4, respectively. During these algebraic decays themicroscale Reynolds number changes between 20 - 10. The Kolmogorov similaritylaw holds irrespective of the difference of the large-scale motions or the difference ofthe energy decay laws.
