Structures of High-Stage Donor-Acceptor Hetero-Structure Graphite Intercalation Compounds

High-stage hetero-structure (HS) graphite interc:alation corrnpounds (GIC's) in thedonor-acceptor system have been synthesized by sequential intercalation ofpotassium into high stage MoCl,-GIC's. X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that thestage 3 HS compound had the layer sequence, / A / D / / A / - = '>where A, D and /in-dicate the acceptor Moil. layer, the donor potassium layer and a graphite layer, re-spectively. From the stage 4 MoCl,-GIC, two kinds of HS compounds were obtained,/A/D///A/=?= and /A/D//D/A/?-?, which appeared in the early and laterperiod of the reaction, respectively. Donor atc>ms prefercntially enter into thegraphite gallery next to the acceptor layer, as expected from the electrostatic energyargument. The in-plane carbon-carbon bond lengtlt in these US compounds increasesby the intercalation of potassium, which indicates the charge compensation.
