Structure and Phase Transition of Fullerene C_<76> Crystal Studied by X-Ray Scattering

Synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction experiutaents of a fttllerene C7(; crystal have elucidatedits structtrre anad successive phase transitions for the first tiume. Two types of crystal lattices,fcc and hexagonal ones, coexist throtngh the teraaperatture range investigated between 10 K and550 K. Both precise analysis of difl'raction patterns as a function of temperature and strttctturalrnodel calculations reveal successive phase transitions at 140 f 10 K arnd 420 :B 10 K associatedwith degrees of unolecttlar orientations for the hexagonal lattice. The fcc lattice trndergoes asimilar phase transition at 140 i 10 K. By applying presstnre and analyzing lattice constants wealso sttrdy compression and pressture-tenaperatture phase diagram of this crystal.
