Numerical Study on Dynamical Wave Number Selection in the One-Dimensional Greenside-Cross Equation

The wave ntrmber selection rnechanisna of the unstable rnode in pattern-forming systems isinvestigated by ntrraaerical siraaulattion of the one-diznensional Greenside-Cross equation. In spatially extended systeuaas a large ntrnaber of' linearly trnstable modes exist f'or a quiescent state in astrpercritical regiutae. The eqtration has the Lyaptrnov functional; the steady state correspondingto its global tninitntnuta is absoltntely stalcle. Its periodicity is difl'erent from that of the tnostttnstable rauode. The ntrmerical siunulation witlaotmt random noises reveals that tl'xe periodicity ofthe steady state obtained frorn small random initial conditions is close to that of the znost unstable mode, but is apparently different frona that ol'the global-zaainimum state. It is also shownntmnaerically that the final state approaches the global-minirnurn state under randotn forcing witha large amplittrde and a low freqtrency.
