The perpendicular components to vorticity of the Laplacian of vorticity multipliedby the kinematic viscosity, v (7'u)., represents the rate of breakdown due to viscouseffects of the frozen motion of vortex lines with fluid particles, whereas the parallelcomponent, v(W'u), represents the deviation of the stretching rates of vortex andfluid line elements. The spatial distributions of high-value regions of these two corn-ponents and vorticity are compared in detail in several analytical and numerical flows. It is found that v(V"ca), takes large negative values typically inside high-vorticityregions. On the other hand, v l (W'u). l is large where the high-vorticity regions are interacting, which suggests that v(V7'co). may serve as a good measure of the degree ofvorticity reconnection.
