An Experimental Study of the Ising Chain Statistics under the Magnetic Field

The first experimental study of the statistics of a quasi-one-dimensional Ising system under the magnetic field H^α, described by the Hamiltonian ℋ=-2J_1 Σ__<<ij>> S^z_iS^z_j-2J_2 Σ__<<ik>> S^z_iS^z_k-g_αμ_BH^α Σ__i S^α_i (α=x, y, z) (1) has been performed, where J_1 and J_2 are the intra- and the inter-chain exchange constants, respectively. A single crystal of the compound (CH_3)_3NHCoCl_3・2H_2O has been used as a model sample of the ferromagnetic system with J_1/k_B = 14.2 K and J_2/k_B = 0.20 K. It has been revealed that the experimental values of the magnetic heat capacity under the field H^α>2J_2/g_zμ_B (≈0.8 kOe) applied along the spin preferential axis are excellently reproduced by the values calculated for the isolated Ising chain under the longitudinal field (α=z; g_z=6.54). For the temperature higher than 7 K (≈J_1/2k_B), the experimental values of the magnetic heat capacity under the field along the spin hard axis have also agreed with the the6retical values for the isolated Ising chain tmder the transverse field (α=y; g_y = 3.90).
