Orbital Frustration and Resonating Valence Bond State in the Spin-1/2 Triangular Lattice LiNiO_2

From the "Li nttclear magnetic resonance (NIVIR) and specific heat naeasurernents of LilNiOz,consisting of a spin-172 triangtrlar lattice, it is demonstr?tted that the previously suggestedspin-glass-like freezing below T., :: 8 K, which is caused by defects of Li ions, is not the trttegrottnd state, bttt rather a quantvrm disordered state is realized withovxt a spin gap. This state ischaracterized by power-law behavior of the teuaaperattrre dependence of the specific he?rt below0.5 K. A spin-liqtrid state with short-range f'errornagnetic correlations is strggested frorn newinsight into the frttstration of' orbital ordering for doubly degenerate e. shells in the triangtularlattice.
