Cloning and Expression of a New Structural Gene for Blasticidin S Deaminase, a Nucleoside Aminohydrolase(Biological Chemistry)

Bacillus cereus K55-S1, a strain resistant to Blasticidin S (BS), produces an inactivating enzyme, BS-deaminase. A structural gene, bsr, of the enzyme was isolated from this strain and introduced into Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli. In both cells, bsr was expressed to give a resistant phenotype against BS, and BS-deaminase activity was detected. The structure and property of the gene were partly analyzed.
