Treatment of methyl 2-pyridyl ketone oxime and methyl 3-pyridyl ketone oxime with phosphorus pentachloride gives the corresponding rearrangement products, N-(2-pyridyl)-acetamide and N-(3-pyridyl) acetaminde, but methyl 4-pyridyl ketone oxime does not undergo this rearrangement by the same treatment. However, treatment of the latter with polyphosphoric acid gives 2,5-(4', 4''-dipyridyl) pyrazine. The treatment of the N-oxides of these compounds with polyphosphoric acid does not give any definable product and results in the recovery of the starting material or resinification.
