Effect if Hydrocarbon Emulsification on Growth and Respiration of Microorganisms in Hydrocarbon Media

The growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which has a low affinity for hydrocarbon, was stimulated by surfactants. The most stimulative surfactants were polyethylene glycol alkylaryl ethers. On the other hand, the growth of the yeasts with high affinities was inhibited or unaffected by the surfactant Tween 20. The respiration rate of a micro-organism in emulsified n-hexadecane medium followed a Michaelis-Menten type relationship.
