Extracellular Production of a Mannosylerythritol Lipid by a Mutant of Candida sp. from n-Alkanes and Triacylglycerols

A mutant of Candida sp. enriched in assimilability of n-alkanes, strain B-7,has been found to extracellularly produce a biosurfactant in concentrations of 25 to 36 g per l of culture broth from n-alkanes or triacylglycerols under suitable cultural conditions, but not to produce it from carbohydrates as carbon sources. The yield of the biosurfactant amounted to 55 to 65% on a weight basis of carbon sources supplied. The biosurfactant has been purified and identified as 4-O-(2', 6'-di-O-acyl-β-d-mannopyranosyl)-D-erythritol.The acyl residues were found to range from C_7 to C_<14> fatty acids and to vary in thier proportions with the carbon sources used.
