An apparatus interfaced with a microcomputer was constructed to maintain dissolved oxygen concentration (DO) at a constant level during cultivation. Agitation speed, and air and oxygen flow rates were automatically varied according to instructions stored in the microcomputer. A program was written to keep the DO level constant during the cultivation in cases of slow and abrupt DO changes. The DO level was maintainable at 2.0±0.4 ppm during the cultivation of Candida brassicae, and high density biomass (53 g/l) was obtained after 9 hr. This DO-stat system was also applicable to the cultivation of microorganisms with various specific oxygen uptake rates without modification of hte program. Another program was written to minimize operating cost by optimum choice of agitation speed and oxygen flow rate while maintaining DO level constant. The operating cost with this program was lower than that with constant agitation speed.
