Ferroelectricity and Dielectric Relaxation in NH_4Al (SO_4)_2・12H_2O

The pyroelectric charge of NH.Al(SQ.).-12H.0 was measured after poling thecrystal. It was found that the crystal becomes ferroelectric below the Curie tempera-ture of T.= - l97'C on warming and has spontaneous polarization of o.to jtC / cm'at - 240'C. The complex dielectric constant was measured at various frequencies in afrequency range between 330 Hz and 1 X 10' Hz. The crystal exhibited dielectric relax-ation and showed a critical slowing down process of polarization. The observed tem-perature and frequency dependences of the complex dielectric constant can be wellapproximated in terms of single relaxation time r(T) of the Debye-type. Abovethe Curie temperature, r(T) was well described by the relation r(T)=(h/k.)?(7' -T.) '?exp(,17'/A.7') with the activation free energy AF=AF.(I -cv(7' -7'.)].The values of A F.and (Y were estimated to be 1.49 X 10 "J and 0.0028deg ', respec-Lively.
