The Difference in Hypoglycemic Activity between Ginseng Radix and Ginseng Radix Rubra in Normal and Epinephrine-induced Hyperglycemic Mice

The oral administration of the aqueous extract of Ginseng Radix (GA) to normal mice caused a significant decrease in the blood glucose level from 174±15 to 142±20 mg/dl 3 h after oral administration at 200 mg/kg (P<0.05). In addition, GA (200 mg/kg) oral administration in epinephrine-induced hyperglycemic mice significantly decreased the blood glucose level (P<0.05). On the other hand, no changes in blood glucose were observed after the administration of the methanol extract of Ginseng Radix Rubra (RM) in normal and epinephrine-induced hyperglycemic mice. The hepatic RNA content from mouse liver was significantly suppressed in GA-injected mice when compared to that in the controls (epinephrine-induced hyperglycemic mice)(P<0.05). These results suggest that GA could become a useful drug for improvement of metabolism.
