To search for possible antitumor promoters, we tested thirty steroids and their glycosides for their inhibitory effects on the Epstein-Barr virus early antigen (EBV-EA) activation by a shortterm in vitro assay. A number of cardiac steroidal glycosides such as digitoxin (25), cymarin (27) and ouabain (30) showed more potent inhibitory effects at low doses than the previously tested natural products. Further, the presence of A/B cis ring junction in the steroid skeleton was suggested to enhance the potency of the activity of these steroids.
