Acetone, ethanol, and/or 70% aqueous ethanol extracts (264 extracts) of 84 species of western North American plants were assayed by using the index of HIV-1-induced cytopathogenic effects in MT-4 cells. 80 extracts from 43 species (one lichen and 42 higher plants) in 22 families showed the anti HIV-1 activity, of which, 13 extracts from 9 species, were very active. One of the effective extracts, an acetone extract of Lethalia vulpina (L.) Hue, was chemically investigated. The compounds having the anti HIV-1 activity were identified as vulpinic acid, ergosterol peroxide, and (+)-usnic acid.
