Activity guided fractionation of 50% ethanolic extract obtained from the steamed root of Rehmannia glutinosa LIBOSCH. (Jyuku-jio) led to isolate 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furaldehyde (5-HMF) as an active constituent having increasing activity of erythrocyte deformability in rats.
