Itaconic Acid Production in an Air-Lift Biorector Using a Modified Draft Tube

• An air-lift bioreactor, covered on the top and bottom of the draft tube with stainless steel sieves (4 meshes), was used in the process of itaconic acid production by Aspergillus terreus. The volumetric oxygen transfer conefficient in water, 2430 h^<-1>, was obtained by the copper-catalyzed sulfite oxidation method. The morphology of mycelia was an intermediate state between pellets and a pulp state due to the draft tube being covered with stainless steel sieves on the top and bottom. Using this type of air-lift bioreactor, the itaconic acid production rate (0.66 g/l/h) increased to double that of a jar fermentor and an air-lift bioreactor with a conventional draft tube.
