With virginiae butanolide(VB)-specific Streptomyces virginias and IM-2-specific Streptomyces sp. FRI-5 as bioassay organisms, 62 Streptomyces species were screened for the ability to produce butyrolactoneautoregulators. Eight (S. canus, S. clavuligerus, S. lividus, S. longwoodensis, S. narbonensis, S. phaeofaciens, S. sioyaensis and S. toyocaensis) showed either VB or IM-2 activities, and three (S. cellulloflavus, S. sclerogranulatus and S. tubercidicus) showed both, indicating that 18% of randomly selected streptomycetes have the ability to produce butyrolactone-autoregulators.
