Cultural conditions were examined for a lytic enzyme (N-acetylmuramidase (EC 3.2.1.17)) production by Streptomyces rutgersensis H-46. The suitable concentrations on glucose and soybean cake extract were 3% and 4%, respectively, and the activity in the culture filtrate was 109 units/ml. The addition of 1% NaCl and 0.5% K_2HPO_4 to the glucose-soybean extract medium was effective in the enzyme production. The activity in the culture filtrate was 180 units/ml. An initial pH of 6.5 and cultivation temperature of 30℃ were found to be optimal. The lytic activity in the culture filtrate was closely related with the spore weight until the stationary stage of growth, and a prominent increase in the activity was observed during autolysis.
