Six strains of Streptomyces sp. isolated from soils were cultivated in various media, and lytic activity in the culture filtrate was measured against lyophilized cells of Streptococcus faecalis. Strain H-46 produced the most active enzyme(s) when cultivated in a medium composed of soy bean cake extract and glucose. The lytic action spectra were also tested. Taxonomical studies of Streptomyces sp. H-46 were carried out according to the method of the International Streptomyces Project, and the strain was identified as Streptomyces rutgersensis (Waksman and Curtis 1916) Waksman and Henrici 1948.
