The taxonomy of Streptomyces sp. no. 41,which produces glucose isomerase [D-xylose ketol-isomerase (EC 5.3.1.5)], was studied according to the ISP (International Streptomyces Project) method.Of the 458 strains described by the ISP, S. misionensis, S. arabicus, S. violaceoniger, S. lividans and S. griseofuscus were judged to be related strains. After detailed investigation, Streptomyces sp. no. 41 was found to be closely related to S. griseofuscus.Though slight differences were observed in aerial mass color, soluble colos and production of antibiotic substances in some media, this microorganism was identified as S. griseofuscus, Sakamoto, Kondo, Yumoto and Arishima 1962,98., and designated as S. griseofuscus S-41.The type strain of S. griseofuscus was found to produce as much glucose isomerase as S. griseofuscus S-41 when cultivated in medium containing D-xylose. The glucose isomerase of both strains also gave similar bands on disc electrophoresis of the proteins extracted from the mycelia.
