A feed-back control system has been developed for the glucose feed rate in a fed-batch culture of bakers' yeast by keeping the ethanol concentration constant. The aim of this paper is to construct time-optimal control strategies for the start-up procedure in this fed-batch culture and in exponential fed-batch culture. The time-optimal control policy is obtained by applying Green's theorem to the mathematical model proposed here which describes the dynamic behaviour. The experimental result of the start-up problem in a fed-batch culture with a feed-back control system shows that the optimal control law is practical and valid. The time-optimal control policy of glucose feed rate for changing the specific growth rate in the exponential fed-batch culture is also studied experimentally and found to be successful.
