This paper discusses the mathematical properties of 23 unstructured growth models proposed by many workers. We deal with the number of equilibrium points and the stability of the continuous steady states, possibility of representing the lag-phase and the declining-phase of batch culture with these models, and the quatitative interchangeability of certain of the models. It was shown that the model 39 introducing the activity concept so as to explain the dynamic behavior of microorganisms and substrate concentrations could be used instead of the model 204 with the substrate inhibition from this viewpoing.
