Identification of a Bacterium which Produced Cell Wall Lytic Enzyme for Red Yeast and Purification of the Enzyme : Studies on Red Yeast Cell Walls(V)

A bacterium which produced a cell wall lytic enzyme for red yeast was isolated from soil. The bacterium was identified as Bacillus pumilus from its taxonomical charactesistics. The lytic enzyme was purified from culture by acetone fractionation, SE-Sephadex column chromatography, and gel filtration with Bio Gel P-60. The enzyme was judged homogeneous by disc electrophoresis. The enzyme degraded specifically the cell walls of red yeast and the enzymatic degradation products were clearly different in degree of polymeriazation of the oligosaccharides from those produced by the cell wall lytic enzyme from Penicillum lilacinum. This result indicated a difference in substrate specificities between the enzymes of Bacillus and Penicillium.
