Quantum Paraelectricity and Anisotropic Polarization Fluctuations

In some substances so called quantum paraelectrics, the structural phase transitionis suppressed by the zero point vibration near T=0. This phenomena is studied bymaking use of the self-consistent phonon theory. From the numerical computationon the dependence of the soft mode frequency on temperature, anisotropic polariza-lion fluctuations due to the electrostatic interaction is found to release the suppres-sion of the transition by the quantum effect. It is shown that the transition tempera-ture depends not only upon the magnitude of the quantum effect but also upon themagnitude of the electrostatic interaction.
