Theory of the Urbach-Martienssen Rule for Mixed Crystals : Application of CPA

A theory of the Urbach-Martienssen rule for the exciton spectrum of alkali halide mixed crystals is presented, on the basis of the coherent potential approximation. This theory is a unified version of both the Sumi-Toyozawa theory of Urbach-Martienssen rule for pure crystals and the Onodera-Toyozawa theory of exciton spectrum for mixed crystals. The temperature and the concentration dependence of absorption spectrum of mixed crystals are calculated and compared with experimental results on KI crystal doped with NaI, RbI, and KCI.
