Stress Induced Ferroelectric Phase Trandition in Quantum-Paraelectrics

The ferroelectric phase transition in some quantum-paraelectrics under the uniaxialstress is analyzed on the basis of the vibronically coupled two-band theory whichtakes into account the anharmonicity of lattice deformation. By calculating the elec-ironic band structure and the density of states, it is shown that the uniaxial stress hasan effect on the soft mode frequency similar to the one due to mixing in the case ofmixtures of incipient ferroelectrics. Resultant critical stresses for the transition areconsistent with available experimental data for KTaO. and SrTi0,.[quantum-paraelectrics, stress induced transition, perovskite, vibronically cou- lj pled two-band model, SrTiO., KTa0,l
