Crystal Lattice Changes Induced by Magnetic Field and Helifan Structure in Holmium Metal

An X-ray diffraction sttrdy has been made on holrttitrrn znetal in a magnetic field at severaltemperatures. In ntost cases, the c-lattice paranaeter has been observed to change discontintrouslywith increasing naagnetic field, corresponding to tlxe appearance of various magnetic structures.The resttlt of nunaerical calctrlations by a self'-consistent mean field rnethod suggests that theeffect of the helifan strttcttrre on the crystal lattice has been observed in a narrow range ofnaagnetic field.
