Susceptibility and High Field Magnetization of Al-Mn Quasicrystalline and Amorphous Alloys

Magnetic susceptibility and high field magnetization up to 300 k0e are measuredon Al-Mn quasicrystalline and amorphous alloys. The average local moment per Mn,<P. >, and the r>aramasnetic Curie ternr>erature, 0, are determined from the temreralure dependence of susceptibility. The magnitude of saturation magnetization perMn, M., is much smaller than that of<P.>, suggesting Mn si?,es are partly magnetic.The atomic fraction X. and the average local morrtent, P., of the magnetic Mn are es-timated from the values of M, and the Curie constant. All the values of X.., P. and0. l increase rnonotonically with increasing Mn content in the quasicrystalline andamorphous phases. The magnetic properties of the quasicrystals are similar to thoseof the amorphous alloys, but slight differences are observed in the high fieldmagnetization process and the values of X.., P. and 0,.
