Effect of Magnetic Transitions and Charge-Ordering on Crystal Lattice in Nd_<0.5>Sr_<0.5>MnO_3

X-ray diffraction zaueasureuauents have been perf'ormed on Ndo.sSro.s1NzInOa sitagle cr3'stals atvariotrs teraaperatvrres and rnagraetic fields. The ternperature dependences of' tlae lattice parana-eters sl?oxv abrttpt ch?tnges in the slopes at the f'errornagnetic transition temperattrr'e of 250 K.Discontinuotrs claanges izu the lattice parautaeters occtur at the charge-order'ing transition teraaper-attrre of 165 K, below wlaicl'n lVIn and lVIr?" tons ?tre spatially ordered. In the ferroraaagnetic34phase, tlae ortlaorhombic lattice distortion is redttced with decr'easitag teuaaperattrre. This beltavior can be attribtrted to a raa?tgtaetoelastic interaction in tlais compotrnd. Superlattice reflectiot'?scorresponding to a dottblirug of' the utait cell along tit<c b ;rxis appear in tlae charge-ordered phase,and tlaeir interasities ch?xnge very little with ternperature and unagrtetic. field except near tlaetransition. Wlten the ch?xrge-ordered phase is transfornaed itato tlae ferroraaagraetic phase Icy anexternal uaaatgnetic field, the stzperlattice reflections vanish and the lattice pararneter,'? discontiza-trotrsly change. Values of the naagnetic fields at which the transition occtrrs are independerat ofdirections of applied raaagraetic fields.
