Pressur-Induced Phase Transitions and Change in Crystal Color in[N (CH_3)_4]_2CuCl_4

X-ray diffraction stvrdies of [N(CH3).3]zCuC1,j single crystals have been carried out under hydrostatic pressure at room temperature. With increasing pressure, phase transitiotus take placesuccessively, to a rnonoclinic phase with a unique axis along b (space group, C';7..-P12) /cl) at 1.4GPa, to a rnonoclinic phase with a trnique axis along c (C:.-PII2? /n) at 1.7 GPa, and then toan orthorhombic phase (D)-P2) 21 21 ) at 3.4 GPa. The transition to the highest-pressure phaseis accompanied by a discontinuous change in the crystal color from light yellow to dark green.The color change is considered to be a result of a change in CuC1f anion geometry.
