• Spontaneous shear strain x 5 . of lithium ammonium tartrate monohydrate (LAT)is examined by the X-ray diffraction method. It is found tl'nat the value of x, is0.021 at 70.5 K, decreases with increasing temp<rrature and becomes zero at the'proper' ferroelastic phase trztnsition temperature T.=9S K
