Phase Transitions of (Thiourea)_3-CCl_4 Clathrate Compound

An X-ray difl'raction study of a clathrate compound, (thiotrrea)3-CCI,j, was performed to elu-cidate the mechanism of phase transitions which are charactex'ized by the orientational orderingof CCl4 molecules. A discontintrous change of lattice constants was observed at (39 B 2) K indicating the second-order phase transition and a continuous change at (64 :E 2) K, the first-orderone. Below the upper transition terraperattrre, the space group of the lattice changed frona R3cto Cc. The lower two phases belong to the sarne space group Cc, though the phase transitionoccurred. The orientation of CCI,t rnolectrles deduced from the structural synanaetry agrees withthat proposed from the previotus heat capacity and NQR rneasurerauents.
