X-Ray Study of Phase Transitions in SC (NH_2)_2

X-ray scattering intensities from thiourea, SC(Nll.), have been carefullymeasured in several phases. Measurements of the diffuse scattering intensity nearthe point (0, 6, 0) were performed above 7'.=169 K for c'-direction and b'-direction. The result suggests that the ferroelectric transition at T. is due Ic) thelattice instability of the transverse optical mode. The scattering intensity around(0, 6, J) observed just above 7'..=202 K shows a strong anisotropy elongatingalong the c'-direction.
