X-ray difl'raction sttndies at low termperatures have been perforrned in order to investigatetlaerrnal properties of crystal lattices in the low-carrier-detasity systenas cerium monopnictides.CeP and CeAs show large crystal-lattice contractiotas with increasing temperatttres up to about120 K and 90 K, respectively. Due to the strong p-[' rmixing, the excited crystal field [3-like stateis expected to produce a shorter interatornic bond length between cerium ions and neighboringpnaictogens tltan that realized by the Y7 grotrnd state, The experirnental restrlts of tlue latticecontractions at low tenuperatures are explained by tlte thertnal average of these crystal fieldstates.
