Lattice Modulation Induced by Magnetic Order in DyZn_2

DyZnw has an orthorhombic CeCtrz-type structure. Between 29 K and the lNeel temperatureof 35 K, the magnetic structtmre is that of sintrsoidal taaodul?ttion characterized Joy a wavevectorq,.=(:....c", where "m. is approximately 0.45 (IIVIAF). The magnetic moments are parallel to the6-axis and, hence, the naodulation is transverse. Below 29 K, the wavevector is O.5c' and thecotnpotrnd is a siznple antiferro naagnet. On this study, X-ray dif['raction zneastmrements werecarried otrt on a single crystal of Dying. There is an anomaly in the thermal expansion at theNeel tenuperature, and satellite peaks were observed at 2q,. in the IVIAF phase. The arnplittrde ofthe lattice modtrlation u was observed to depend on<;-.. The ['act that the lattice modulation haswavevector 2q. has been exarnined on the basis o['a model which takes into account modificationsof the exchange interactions dtre to atornic displacenaents. Ftrrthermore, the same model canexplain the change of the thernaal expansion. Meastrrements in unagnetic fields up to l.4T werealso performed. A new satellite peak was observed at (O 0 6f(..) in fields. The appearance ofthe new satellite peak is expected by the model. The magnetic phase diagram was deterrninedby uneasurements of satellite peaks at various tenuperatures and ttaagnetic fields.
